Construction Document Reading - VILT

This 30 hour hands-on course, also known as blueprint reading, is designed to provide you with the essential skills to understand a complete set of drawings: architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical and civil, through the basics of lines, symbols & abbreviations, used by architects and consultants, and their relationship to sections, details and specifications.

  • Design process and the role of design professionals
  • Building codes and bylaws
  • Layout basics
  • Architectural and consultant drawings and how they fit together
  • Architectural scales
  • Floor plans, sections and elevations
  • Lines, symbols, notation & abbreviations
  • Dimensions, finishes and details
  • Understanding specifications
  • Commercial and woodframe blueprints

Course Instructor Information

Karl Laursen, GSC Estimator, GSC Project Manager.

With more than 40 years of experience in ICI construction, Karl is committed to lifelong learning. After starting his career with a four-year Architectural Blueprint Reading degree in 1965, he retired in 2019 having earned dual Gold Seal designations in both Estimating and Project Management. His extensive experience includes ownership of a General Contracting business in the Okanagan, roles in facility operations and construction for Hallmark Farms Poultry, Owner’s Construction Manager for Okanagan Hatchery, and General Superintendent, Project Manager, and Estimator at Walter Cabott Construction in Port Moody. Throughout his career, Karl has been an active contributor to the BC construction community, holding positions as former Board Chair of BCCA and a CCA director. Karl has been a member of the Southern Interior Construction Association (SICA) for 25 years, serving on the SICA board for 10 years, including a term as Board Chair.
