This 30 hour course, also known as blueprint reading, is designed to provide you with the essential skills to understand a COMPLETE set of drawings:  architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical and civil, through the basics of lines, symbols & abbreviations used by architects and consultants, and their relationship to sections, details and specifications.

Course Content:        

  • Design process and the role of design professionals
  • Building codes and bylaws
  • Layout basics
  • Architectural and consultant drawings and how they fit together
  • Architectural scales
  • Floor plans, sections and elevations
  • Lines, symbols, notation & abbreviations
  • Dimensions, finishes and details
  • Understanding specifications
  • Commercial and woodframe blueprints

Course Instructor Information

Instructor:  Jim Theriault

Jim graduated from SAIT as a Draftsman/Estimator and has been working in the construction industry for 40 plus years.  Jim currently owns his own business and has fulfilled positions from designer through to estimator, project manager and superintendent.  Jim has worked in all areas of construction including residential, multi-family, and ICI sectors. His experience with numerous developers, general contractors and subcontractors in both the office and field has solidified his knowledge within the construction industry and given him the necessary hands on experience.
