Farewell to our Education Admin and Hello to our new SICA staff 2022

SICA has seen a few changes this year and we would like to say farewell to our Education Administrative Assistant and introduce the Team for 2022.

Grich De Vera joined the SICA Team in May 2020 as the Education Administrative Assistant.  She had moved to Kelowna along with her daughter from Dubai in 2018.  When asked what success meant to Grich she answered, “To feel a sense of accomplishment at the end of each day.” She was very personable, highly skilled and organized like nobody’s business; Grich was all about making the most of her day!

Grich had a passion to pursue a career in Law so went back to school to become a Legal Assistant while still performing her duties in the Education Department.  One day soon Grich hopes to become a Paralegal and we have no doubt that she will be in the top of her class.  Grich started her internship with Pihl Law on April 18th …although we wish her much success and happiness in her new career, we were SAD to see her go.

We celebrated Grich on her last day with some Sushi and a song!  Grich always went above and beyond her role and responsibilities; Pihl Law is very lucky to have her! As we say goodbye to Grich, SICA and the Education Team would like to welcome Trinh Son to the Education Administrative Assistant position.

Trinh Son

Trinh had more than 20+ years engaging in the non-profit industry in Vietnam, working with the disadvantaged/marginalized communities on education, health care, construction, and community development projects. Trinh and her husband moved to Kelowna from Vietnam in 2020 to be with their daughter who was studying at UBCO.  We are very excited to have Trinh join the education team and look forward to getting to know her better.  If the past few weeks are any indication…she is going to fit right in and become a huge asset!

Every Child Matters - Indigenous History Month

I write to you heavy with emotions regarding the recent discovery at the Kamloops residential school. This is a long-awaited confirmation of the cultural annihilation forced upon our indigenous communities. I feel the profound grief and anger of my ancestral lineage being of the Metis Nation, as well as a feeling of deep shame of being Canadian right now.

SICA training courses prove practical and meaningful to students

It’s no exaggeration to say the global economy has been paralyzed by the pandemic. Fortunately for many Canadians, the construction industry was one of the few beacons in an otherwise slow economy greatly inhibited by COVID-19. Of course, the many forms of construction activity couldn’t forge ahead frivolously – social distancing, rigorous cleaning protocols and an abundance of caution were the norm on work sites everywhere, and it’s clear these methods will continue in the months ahead.
