Celebrating Construction Month at Thompson Rivers University
KAMLOOPS, BC April 23, 2018 - The Kamloops building community was proud to celebrate BC’s Construction & Skilled Trades Month with a breakfast held at Thompson River's University on Monday. Contractors, apprentices, foundation program students and industry support organizations gathered at the TRU Campus to recognize the impact the construction industry has on the local Kamloops economy. While also acknowledging how skilled trades and construction is a viable and exciting career path, one filled with plenty of opportunities.
“We know that only one in seventy students will enter construction trades within a year of graduation but in order to fill the need for works one in five needs to join a trade. Today was a great celebration of the terrific strides the Kamloops area specifically School District No. 73 and TRU Trades & Technology are making in getting more students into apprenticeships and supporting their progression towards becoming a journeyperson” said Jason Henderson, SICA CEO.
During the breakfast, Jason Henderson, CEO of SICA awarded Stuart Olson Inc. with a Construction Leadership Award for their support in helping students get hands-on experience during the construction of the new TRU Trades & Technology building.
BC Construction & Skilled Trades Month was declared by the provincial government to recognize that the steadfast work of the construction sector has an impact on every community in BC and that the skilled trades provide rewarding sustainable career opportunities. The contractors at today’s event truly showcase how rewarding a career in the construction industry can be.
In partnership with the Canadian Home Builders Association – Central Interior, Thompson River's University Trades & Technology and the Southern Interior Construction Association the Construction & Skilled Trades Breakfast included representatives from both organizations in addition to students and faculty totally over 200 people.
